On behalf of Stichting Mevrouw Meijer and VSO Leo Kanner, we participated in a design competition for the transformation of a school in Oegstgeest. VSO Leo Kanner is secondary special education, what means educational program for students with autism spectrum disorders.
This unique target group desires and a reinterpretation of the "ideal school". Whether consciously or not, the target group desires overview, recognisability and a pattern of expectations. The historical Julianaschool is situated in a park-like setting around Kasteel Endegeest in Oegstgeest. In addition, the school has had several functions and at least as many renovations over the past 100 years.
All these challenges resulted in a pavilion design. In which various volumes have been situated and linked around the historical school. The different volumes have their own identity and are located around the heart of the building, the outdoor playground. The organisation is recognisable to students. A flexible design allows students to grow through school and develop through a personal learning plan.
