Behind a carefully detailed grid of iroko wood and glass, this split-level house slowly reveals its secrets. Thanks to an internal loft and floor-to-ceiling windows, each of the seven floors offers a surprising view of the surroundings or of life inside the house. Images by Jeroen Musch.

Next Level is part of a row of self-build plots in the Veemarkt district in Utrecht. The north side of the house borders directly on a canal, where there is an unobstructed view of the green surroundings. On the south side, the house has a 13.5-meter-deep front garden with a small annex facing the street, which serves as an office/studio.
Because the annex and garden create sufficient distance from the street, it was possible to create a large living space directly adjacent to the garden. Due to the lack of an entrance hall, the interior and garden are strongly connected. This also creates an inviting and flexible ground floor.
During the day, life takes place on the bottom three floors: cooking and eating on the ground floor; relaxing, watching television and playing on the second and third. Upstairs are the children's bedrooms, a guest room, a bathroom and a workspace. At the top is a large master bedroom with private bathroom, walk-in closet and roof terrace. Fourteen PV panels on the roof provide the energy supply.
A loft that gets larger from top to bottom separates the seven split-level floors in Next Level. The loft ensures that daylight is distributed throughout the interior.
There are interesting vistas throughout the house. Glass balustrades have been used for optimum transparency. The common areas have been kept completely open to bring in the winter sun and let the warm daylight shine into the house.
