De Nok

The former residential farmhouse on Brandsweg was destroyed after a fire. The historical context called for restoration of the rural appearance to contemporary standards. The resident’s wish was a life-proof home with all support functions on the first floor. Images by Jeroen Musch.

The main volume of the new farmhouse remained the same in ridge and gutter height. To prevent cluttering, the length of the house has been increased. This makes the farmhouse house more recognizable from the street and allows all functions in the new main volume.

The house has a flexible design in an all-wood construction with large spans. In this way a free divisibility of spaces is created. Architectural elements are cleverly used to let light in. By making use of large overhangs and deep reveal, light enters at the right moments and the free view remains optimal. And through the glass ridge-tile the light comes in a unique way from above.

During the process choices have been made from a material point of view. The roof with its crafted structures and details of wooden rafters and purlins creates a very warm and friendly interior.

The loose volume with cantilever above the kitchen gives the living room size, layout and scale. The large windows on the north and south sides with overhang result in maximum perception of the garden, where animals roaming freely in it. The street facade, on the other hand, is more closed, as was the case with the original farmhouse.
